Social Security Offices Resume In-Person Services; Continue Expanded Online Services

On April 7, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that local Social Security offices would be restoring in-person services, including for patrons without an appointment.

While officials strongly encourage calling ahead to schedule appointments to avoid the wait and/or continuing to use the “My Social Security” personalized online features to access services online, customers will be able to come to Social Security offices and receive service without an appointment.

“Walk-in customers may encounter delays and longer wait times,” warned the SSA in their recent release. “Be aware that our offices tend to be the busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week, and during the early part of the month.”

As many SSA customers have health vulnerabilities, masks and physical distancing will be required for customers and employees within SSA offices.

Online is Still a Great Option!

Most SSA services are available online at www.ssa.gov or by telephone (1-800-772-1213) and do not require an in-person visit. Creating a my Social Security account can provide access to a wide variety of personalized services – including starting or changing direct deposits, requesting a replacement SSA-1099, obtaining proof of benefits, receiving personal Social Security Statements, retirement calculators and much more. The website also has a wealth of information for individuals with questions about retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits.
