High school writers and artists from across the county are putting their creativity to work in addressing fair housing in the county’s 10th annual Fair Housing Art and Writing Contest. This year’s theme – “2020 Vision: Looking Towards a Brighter Future in Fair Housing.”
The contest, hosted by the Fairfax County Student Human Rights Commission, is aimed at creating awareness among high school students of fair housing issues and laws, and to promote the importance of providing equal housing opportunities for all.
Housing discrimination denies people the right to choose the neighborhoods in which they want to live. The Fairfax County Human Rights Ordinance and the federal Fair Housing Act guarantee everyone the right to rent or buy housing on a fair and equal basis regardless of their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or familial status. In Fairfax, it is also illegal to discriminate in housing based on marital status or elderliness (age 55 +).
The contest welcomes original works from Fairfax County high school students in the categories of art/poster and literature. One winner will be selected in each category and receive a $300 prize co-sponsored by the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors. Winners will also be recognized at the Office of Human Rights and Equity Programs’ Annual Fair Housing Month Luncheon in April 2020. All entries must be postmarked by March 13, 2020.
